Bullying – A Pervasive Threat

Bullying – A Pervasive Threat

While anyone who has a child in school, knows someone who has a child in school, or works in a school knows bullying takes place, the vast majority of people who have been bulled don’t report the incident(s). Nearly everyone who works either has been bullied at work, knows someone who has been bullied at work, or has witnessed someone being bullied at work. But still most do not report it.

Those who have been bullied seem to feel alone.
But that is certainly not the case. Bullying at school, in the work place, and over social media now is rampant.
Let’s take a look at some of the statistics put together by several national organizations dedicated to putting an end to the bullying spreading across our nation. These statistics were gathered from web sites such as pacer.org and nobullying.com.

A study conducted by the Journal of the American Medical Association’s Pediatrics Network in 2013 showed 80% of young people who commit suicide did so because of bullying or victimization by their peers.
Another survey conducted in 2013, this one by Knowthenet.org, talked to 2001 teenagers. A startling fact emerged that 37% of cyberbullying victims never reported the bullying. And the older a teen gets, the less likely he or she is to report the incident. In this survey, nearly 85% of those age 19 reported being victims of cyberbullying and never reporting it.
