What to Expect on Your First Karate Class
If this is your first time trying karate, here’s what you can expect to make the experience smooth and enjoyable!
When you walk into the dojo (training area), the first thing you’ll do is meet your instructor, who will be guiding you through your class. They'll show you how to properly wear your Gi (the uniform) and teach you how to tie your belt, which is an important part of karate tradition.
You'll also learn some dojo etiquette, like how to walk on and off the mat, how to bow (a sign of respect), and where to sit during the class. These small rituals help create a respectful environment for everyone, from beginners to advanced students.
At CMA, your first class will be a semi-private lesson. This means you'll get personal attention from the instructor while you focus on learning the basic techniques—like kicks, punches, and stances—at your own pace. This is a great way to build confidence before joining the group classes. It’s not just about learning karate; it’s also a fantastic opportunity to meet new people and start building friendships.
In fact, many of my own children’s best friends are the ones they met while studying karate together. It’s an amazing way for kids (and adults) to bond over a shared interest, while also building discipline, focus, and confidence.
Looking forward to seeing you on the mat!
